Aaron Zigman

Biography

Aaron Zigman is an American composer, songwriter, arranger, conductor, producer, and musician known for his extensive work in film and television music. He was born on January 6, 1963, in San Diego, California. He is a classically trained musician whose career has combined orchestral composition with popular music and Hollywood film scoring.

Early Life and Career

Zigman began studying music at a young age under the guidance of his mother, a pianist and harpist. He later attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While still in college, he signed a songwriting contract with Almo Irving Music and began writing, arranging, and orchestrating music for artists including Carly Simon and for the television series Fame.

He also studied with his cousin George Bassman, a respected composer and orchestrator associated with classic Hollywood cinema. Zigman subsequently worked as a studio musician and developed a career as a songwriter, arranger, and producer.

Work in Popular Music

Before becoming primarily known as a film composer, Zigman worked extensively in the recording industry. He wrote, arranged, and produced music for numerous prominent performers, including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Natalie Cole, Tina Turner, Phil Collins, Seal, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Dionne Warwick, and Quincy Jones.

His experience in popular music gave him a broad musical vocabulary that later became an important part of his film-scoring career.

Film and Television Career

Zigman transitioned more fully into film music during the 1990s. His major breakthrough came in 2002 when he composed the score for John Q., directed by Nick Cassavetes and starring Denzel Washington. Cassavetes had previously heard Zigman's symphonic work Rabin and invited him to score the film.

He subsequently became one of Hollywood's prolific film composers. Among his best-known scores are The Notebook (2004), Bridge to Terabithia (2007), The Proposal (2009), Flicka (2006), The Company Men (2010), Flash of Genius (2008), For Colored Girls (2010), Sex and the City (2008), Sex and the City 2 (2010), My Sister's Keeper (2009), and The Shack (2017).

His collaboration with Nick Cassavetes became particularly notable. The two worked together on six films, including John Q. and The Notebook. Zigman's score for The Notebook became especially popular and helped establish him as a leading composer of romantic and emotionally driven film music.

Awards and Recognition

Zigman has received numerous honors for his work. He won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Original Song for his work on the Showtime television film Crown Heights. He has also received multiple BMI Film & TV Awards for his film compositions.

Beyond film music, Zigman has continued to compose concert works. His orchestral composition Tango Manos was a finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize for Music, demonstrating the breadth of his work beyond commercial film scoring.
