Agha (born Agha Jan Baig; 21 March 1914 – 30 April 1992) was an Indian actor and comedian who worked primarily in Hindi cinema. One of the most popular comic actors of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, he was celebrated for his impeccable comic timing, expressive performances, and versatility. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he appeared in over 300 films and became a beloved figure in Indian cinema.

Early Life

Agha was born on 21 March 1914 in Pune, Bombay Presidency, British India, into a family of Persian descent. He developed an interest in acting from a young age and entered the film industry during the late 1930s. His natural talent for comedy quickly earned him recognition.

Career

Agha began his film career with supporting roles before becoming one of Hindi cinema's leading comedians. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, he established himself as a dependable comic actor, often providing humor in dramas, romances, and action films.

He appeared in numerous successful films, including Patita (1953), Mr. & Mrs. '55 (1955), Bhabhi (1957), Kala Pani (1958), Gharana (1961), Singapore (1960), Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai (1961), Dil Hi To Hai (1963), Farz (1967), and Bombay to Goa (1972). He worked alongside many of Hindi cinema's biggest stars, including Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor, Rajendra Kumar, Joy Mukherjee, Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, and Amitabh Bachchan.

Although best known for comedy, Agha also portrayed character roles and occasionally played villains, demonstrating remarkable versatility throughout his career. His lively screen presence and witty dialogue delivery made him one of the industry's most sought-after supporting actors.

Personal Life

Agha's son, Jalal Agha, also became a successful actor in Hindi cinema, carrying forward the family's association with the film industry.
