Agnes Bernice Martin was born on March 22, 1912, in Macklin, Saskatchewan, Canada. After her father’s death, her family moved several times before eventually settling in the United States.

Martin studied at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, where she developed an interest in art and earned a degree in education. She later attended Teachers College, Columbia University in New York City and earned a Master of Arts degree in 1952.

During her early years, Martin worked as a teacher before deciding to pursue a full-time career as an artist.

Career

Martin moved to New York City in the 1950s, where she became part of the emerging modern art community. She was influenced by Abstract Expressionist artists but developed a more restrained and meditative approach than many of her contemporaries.

In the late 1950s, she lived in the artist community of Coenties Slip in Lower Manhattan, where she developed friendships with artists such as Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, and Jasper Johns. During this period, she began creating the grid-based paintings that became her signature style.
