Biography
A. K. Hangal (1 February 1914 – 26 August 2012) was an Indian actor and freedom fighter who became one of the most respected character actors in Hindi cinema. Known for his gentle personality, emotional depth, and realistic performances, he appeared in more than 200 films during a career spanning over four decades.
Born as Avtaar Kishan Hangal in Peshawar, British India (now in Pakistan), Hangal was involved in the Indian independence movement before entering the film industry. He spent many years working in theatre and was associated with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA), which helped shape his acting style.
He made his Hindi film debut with Teesri Kasam and became a familiar face in Bollywood through his portrayals of fathers, elderly men, and compassionate supporting characters. Some of his most memorable films include Sholay, where he played Rahim Chacha, Namak Haraam, Aaina, Shaukeen, Manzil, Bawarchi, and Guddi.
A. K. Hangal worked with many legendary actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, and Shashi Kapoor. His performances were appreciated for their simplicity, dignity, and emotional realism.
In his later years, Hangal faced financial difficulties, but he continued to be respected as a veteran artist. He received recognition for his contribution to Indian cinema, including the Padma Bhushan (awarded posthumously in 2013) and several lifetime achievement honors.
A. K. Hangal passed away on 26 August 2012 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India. He remains remembered as one of Hindi cinema's finest character actors, whose understated performances left a lasting impact on generations of audiences.
