Biography

A.K. Lohithadas (Ambazhathil Karunakaran Lohithadas) was an acclaimed Indian screenwriter, playwright, director and producer who made a major contribution to Malayalam cinema. He was born on 10 May 1955 in Chalakudy, Kerala, and died on 28 June 2009 in Kochi at the age of 54.

Lohithadas began his career in theatre before entering Malayalam cinema as a screenwriter. His film-writing debut was Thaniyavarthanam (1987), directed by Sibi Malayil. He subsequently wrote several landmark films, including Kireedam (1989), Dasharatham (1989), His Highness Abdullah (1990), Bharatham (1991), Amaram (1991), Kamaladalam (1992), Vatsalyam (1993), Chenkol (1993), Thooval Kottaram (1996) and Veendum Chila Veettukaryangal (1999).

He made his directorial debut with Bhoothakkannadi (1997) and later directed films such as Karunyam (1997), Kanmadam (1998), Joker (2000), Soothradharan (2001), Kasthooriman (2003) and Nivedyam (2007). He also acted in a handful of films and had credits in other areas of film production.

Known for his realistic, emotionally intense, and character-driven screenplays, Lohithadas created stories that often explored family relationships, social pressures, moral conflicts, and the struggles of ordinary people. His body of work earned major recognition, including a National Film Award and several Kerala State Film Awards.

Lohithadas remains one of the most influential screenwriters in Malayalam cinema, with films such as Thaniyavarthanam, Kireedam, Bharatham, Amaram and Vatsalyam continuing to be regarded as classics.
