Biography
Alain Chouet, born on August 24, 1946, in Paris, is a former senior executive of the French foreign intelligence service, also co-author of several works concerning Islamism and terrorism.
He passed the entrance exam for the analyst (senior civilian executive) of the External Documentation and Counter-Espionage Service (SDECE) in July 19721 and passed this competition. After an initial training phase in the central services of this service and then his first assignment in central, he was sent to the French embassy in Beirut where he worked undercover as an embassy secretary. He remained there from 1974 to 1976, before being sent for three years to Damascus (1976-1979).
Returning to Paris, he was appointed head of the office for the coordination of anti-terrorist research and operations (1980-1985), then was put in charge of a mission at the French embassy in Morocco.
He made his first foray into intelligence as a technical advisor on matters relating to Islam and terrorism to the Director of Intelligence (1996-1999). He was appointed head of the Security Intelligence Service at the DGSE, which replaced the former counter-espionage section, in 2000-2001. He left this institution in 2001 2.
He is an associate researcher at the European Security Intelligence and Strategy Center, based in Brussels, and also a lecturer at the University of Paris II, as part of the university diploma in contemporary criminal threat studies.
