Alan Arkin was born in Brooklyn and raised in Los Angeles. His parents, both teachers, fostered his early love for the arts. Arkin studied acting at Los Angeles City College and later at Bennington College in Vermont. He was also a talented musician and initially pursued a career in folk music with the group The Tarriers.
