Aldo Tonti

Biography

Aldo Tonti (March 2, 1910 – July 7, 1988) was an Italian cinematographer and occasional actor, regarded as one of the important figures of postwar Italian cinema. He was known for his expressive lighting, realistic visual style, and collaborations with some of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century.

Early Life and Career

Aldo Tonti was born in Rome, Italy. He began his career as a press photographer before entering the film industry in 1934 as a camera assistant. He became a director of photography in 1939 with Piccoli naufraghi and soon gained recognition for his innovative approach to cinematography.

Cinematography Career

Tonti became closely associated with Italian neorealism, a movement known for realistic storytelling and naturalistic visuals. His early breakthrough came with Luchino Visconti's Ossessione (1943), considered one of the foundations of Italian neorealism.

He worked with many renowned directors, including Federico Fellini, Roberto Rossellini, King Vidor, John Huston, Alberto Lattuada, Mario Monicelli, and Richard Fleischer.

Nights of Cabiria

The Savage Innocents

For Nicholas Ray's The Savage Innocents (1960), Tonti received major recognition and won the Silver Ribbon Award for Best Cinematography in 1961.

Later Career

During the later part of his career, Tonti worked on international productions, including Hollywood films. He continued creating visually striking films until his retirement in 1982.

Death and Legacy

Aldo Tonti died on July 7, 1988, in Rome, Italy, at the age of 78.
