Biography
Alex Tyson Carey was born on August 27, 1991, in Loxton, South Australia. A naturally gifted athlete, Carey displayed exceptional talent in both cricket and Australian Rules football during his early years. Initially, his professional aspirations were focused on football. He captained the Greater Western Sydney Giants during their early stages in the AFL development program. However, after being released from the team before their official entry into the AFL in 2012, Carey made the pivotal decision to return to cricket—an opportunity that would ultimately shape his sporting legacy.
Domestic Cricket Career
Carey started his cricketing journey as a top-order batsman for South Australia but struggled to find consistency. Recognizing his potential and versatility, he made a critical shift to wicketkeeping—a decision that marked a turning point in his career.
His breakout moment came during the 2016–17 Sheffield Shield season, where he not only scored over 500 runs but also set a record with 59 dismissals in a single season. This exceptional performance established him as one of the most promising wicketkeeper-batsmen in the Australian domestic circuit. He continued to shine in domestic cricket and played a major role in leading South Australia to success, including scoring a century in the 2024–25 Sheffield Shield final and helping the team lift their first title in nearly three decades.
International Career
Alex Carey made his debut in One Day Internationals (ODIs) in January 2018 against England and shortly thereafter, made his T20 International debut. His calm demeanor and reliable performances with both gloves and bat soon earned him a place in Australia’s Test squad. He made his Test debut in December 2021 during the Ashes series against England.
Carey quickly proved his worth as a dependable wicketkeeper and middle-order batsman. His stumping of Jonny Bairstow during the 2023 Ashes series stirred debate but was widely regarded as a smart piece of cricket. In 2025, he delivered a career-defining performance in a Test match against Sri Lanka, scoring 156 runs—his highest in the format and a record for an Australian wicketkeeper in Asia.
