Biography

Alex Garland was born in London to a political cartoonist father, Nicholas Garland, and a psychoanalyst mother, Caroline Medawar. He grew up in a creative environment, which later influenced his storytelling abilities. Garland attended the University of Manchester, where he studied the history of art. His educational background and early exposure to various artistic mediums helped shape his distinctive narrative style.

Novelist

Garland gained recognition in the literary world with his debut novel, The Beach (1996). The book, set in Thailand, explores themes of paradise, isolation, and utopia gone awry. It was a critical and commercial success and was later adapted into a film directed by Danny Boyle, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
