Biography
Alex Karpovsky is an American actor, director, writer, producer, and film editor, born on September 23, 1975, in Newton, Massachusetts. He studied at Boston University and later earned a master's degree in visual ethnography from the University of Oxford.
Karpovsky began his filmmaking career with the independent feature The Hole Story (2005), which he wrote, directed, produced, edited, and starred in. He followed it with films such as Woodpecker (2008), Trust Us, This Is All Made Up (2009), Rubberneck (2012), and Red Flag (2012).
He gained widespread recognition for playing Ray Ploshansky on HBO's comedy-drama series Girls (2012–2017). His performance earned him a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.
Karpovsky has also appeared in films including Tiny Furniture, Sleepwalk with Me, Inside Llewyn Davis, 7 Chinese Brothers, Folk Hero & Funny Guy, Hail, Caesar!, The Front Runner, and The Sound of Silence.
For Amazon's psychological thriller Homecoming (2018–2020), he played Craig Petrosian, appearing across both seasons. He later portrayed Jeff Glaser in the miniseries Angelyne (2022).
As a director, Karpovsky has also directed episodes of Girls, Love, The New Yorker Presents, and the FXX series Oh Jerome, No. His career combines independent filmmaking with acting in acclaimed television and feature films.
