Alice Walker (born 1944) is an American novelist, poet, and activist, best known for her Pulitzer Prize–winning novel The Color Purple (1982). Born in Eatonton, Georgia, she grew up in the segregated American South, experiences that deeply shaped her writing and commitment to social justice.
