Biography

Ameeta (born Qamar Sultana) is a retired Indian actress who appeared in Hindi-language films during the 1950s and 1960s. She is best remembered for her performances in classics such as Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959), and Mere Mehboob (1963). Although she did not achieve long-term stardom, Ameeta earned recognition for her beauty, graceful screen presence, and versatile performances in both leading and supporting roles.

Early Life

Ameeta was born as Qamar Sultana in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, into a family closely associated with the entertainment industry. Her mother, Shakuntala Devi, was an actress with the Corinthian Theatre Company in Kolkata, while her maternal uncle was the well-known Pakistani actor Aslam Pervaiz.

She suffered a personal tragedy at the age of one when her father, Choudhary Riaz Ahmed, passed away. Following his death, Ameeta and her mother moved to Mumbai, where she completed her education at a boarding school.

Career

Early Career

A devoted admirer of actress Madhubala, Ameeta was discovered while reenacting a sword-fighting scene from Baadal (1951). Filmmaker Lekhraj Bhakhri noticed her talent and cast her in Thokar, where she appeared in a supporting role under the screen name Jayjaywanti.

Her first leading role came in Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1953), directed by Vijay Bhatt, where she adopted the screen name Ameeta. Although the film was not commercially successful, it marked the beginning of her career as a heroine. She subsequently appeared in films such as Amar Kirtan, Badal Aur Bijli, Baaghi Sardar, and Indrasabha.

Rise to Fame

Ameeta's career gained momentum in 1956 when she starred alongside her idol Madhubala in the successful historical romance Shirin Farhad. She followed this with leading roles in Abhimaan, Zamana, and Hum Sab Chor Hain opposite Shammi Kapoor.

Her biggest breakthrough came with Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), produced by Filmistan Studios. The film was designed to establish her as a major star and featured her opposite Shammi Kapoor. While the film became a tremendous commercial success, it also marked Shammi Kapoor's rise to superstardom.

She next starred in Goonj Uthi Shehnai (1959) opposite Rajendra Kumar. The musical drama became one of the year's biggest box-office hits and is remembered for its unforgettable soundtrack. Despite delivering a mature performance, much of the film's success was credited to Rajendra Kumar.

Later Career

Although Ameeta played important roles in several successful films, she was unable to maintain her position as a leading heroine. She later appeared in notable multi-starrer productions, including Rakhi (1962) and Mere Mehboob (1963).

For her performance in Mere Mehboob, she received a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

During the mid-1960s, Ameeta increasingly accepted supporting and negative roles in films such as Rishte Naate (1965) and Aasra (1966). She also appeared in Around the World (1967) and Haseena Maan Jayegi (1968).

Following the completion of Haseena Maan Jayegi, Ameeta retired from acting, choosing to leave the film industry after becoming disillusioned by the lack of substantial leading roles.

Personal Life

After retiring from films, Ameeta married actor and director Kamran. The couple had a daughter, Sabia (Sabeeha), who later appeared in Hindi films including Anokha Rishta (1986), 100 Days (1991), Khiladi (1992), and Qayamat Ki Raat (1992).

Kamran was also the biological father of filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan and filmmaker Sajid Khan, making Ameeta their stepmother.

After leaving cinema, Ameeta largely stayed away from public life. She made a rare public appearance in 2005 to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Cine & TV Artistes' Association.
