Andy Warhol

Biography

Andy Warhol (1928–1987) was an American artist, filmmaker, and cultural icon, best known as a leading figure in the Pop Art movement. Born on August 6, 1928, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Warhol displayed artistic talent from a young age and studied commercial art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University).

Warhol began his career as a commercial illustrator, gaining recognition for his distinctive style. In the 1960s, he became a central figure in Pop Art, creating iconic works that blurred the lines between fine art, advertising, and celebrity culture. His silkscreen prints of Campbell’s Soup Cans, Coca-Cola bottles, and portraits of Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley challenged traditional notions of art and reflected contemporary consumer culture.

Beyond painting, Warhol experimented with film, photography, and music, founding The Factory, a studio that became a hub for avant-garde artists, musicians, and socialites. His work explored fame, mass production, and the intersection of art and commerce. Warhol died on February 22, 1987, leaving a lasting influence on contemporary art, visual culture, and popular media.
