Biography

Anthony Michael Hall is an American actor, director, and producer who became one of the most recognizable young stars of 1980s Hollywood. He is especially known for his collaborations with filmmaker John Hughes in Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Weird Science. He later established himself as a versatile adult actor in film and television.

Early Life

Anthony Michael Hall was born on April 14, 1968, in West Roxbury, Massachusetts. His mother, Mercedes Hall, was an actress and singer, while his father, Larry Hall, owned an auto-body shop. Hall began acting in commercials at the age of seven and continued performing throughout his childhood.

Breakthrough

Hall's first major film success came with National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), in which he played Rusty Griswold, the son of Chevy Chase's character. His performance attracted the attention of John Hughes and led to a remarkable run of teenage films.

John Hughes Films

Hall became one of Hughes's defining young actors. He starred in:

• Sixteen Candles (1984) — Ted "Farmer Ted" Farmer
• The Breakfast Club (1985) — Brian Johnson
• Weird Science (1985) — Gary Wallace

These films established Hall as a memorable screen presence and often placed him in roles involving intelligent, awkward, or socially inexperienced teenagers.

In Weird Science, Hall played Gary, one of two unpopular teenagers who create a woman using a computer. The film became an enduring 1980s cult comedy.

Career Changes

Concerned about being typecast as a teenage character, Hall turned down roles in Hughes's Pretty in Pink and Ferris Bueller's Day Off. He also joined Saturday Night Live for the 1985–86 season.

He later appeared in films such as Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Six Degrees of Separation (1993). In 1994, he directed and starred in Hail Caesar, a comedy about an aspiring rock musician.

Pirates of Silicon Valley

Hall received renewed attention for his performance as Bill Gates in the 1999 television film Pirates of Silicon Valley. His portrayal of the Microsoft co-founder was widely praised and helped demonstrate his ability to take on more mature and dramatic roles.

The Dead Zone

One of Hall's biggest later successes came with the television series The Dead Zone, based on Stephen King's novel. He played Johnny Smith, a man who develops psychic abilities after awakening from a long coma. The series ran from 2002 to 2007 and became an important second chapter in Hall's career.

Later Work

Hall continued appearing in major films and television productions. He played television reporter Mike Engel in The Dark Knight (2008) and later appeared in Foxcatcher, Live by Night, War Machine, and Halloween Kills. More recently, he has appeared in projects including Trigger Warning and Reacher.
