Biography

Anurag Singh is a prominent Indian film director and writer, widely recognized for his impactful contributions to both Bollywood and Punjabi cinema. Based in Mumbai, he has crafted some of the biggest blockbusters across industries, earning a reputation for his powerful storytelling and commercial success.

 

 

Early Life and Education

Anurag Singh was born on 17 November to Dr. Charan Singh Thind and Dr. Baljit Kaur. Raised in Jalandhar, he excelled academically from a young age. A brilliant student, he topped the CISCE Class 10 examinations and secured PMT Rank 1, breaking several academic records.

Although he began as a medical student, his passion for filmmaking led him to Australia, where he explored cinema more deeply before eventually entering the Indian film industry. Anurag has an elder brother, Armaan Singh, a well-known chief engineer based in California. He remains closely connected to his family, especially his nephews and nieces in Jalandhar.

 

 

Early Career in Bollywood

Anurag Singh started his career in Bollywood as an assistant director, working with celebrated filmmaker Raj Kanwar. During this period, he contributed to several major films and developed a deep understanding of commercial cinema. He was also involved as an assistant director and writer in iconic films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! and Jurm.

 

In 2007, he made his directorial debut in Bollywood with Raqeeb, starring Jimmy Shergill. Although the film did not perform well at the box office, it marked Anurag’s entry into mainstream filmmaking.

 

 

Rise in Punjabi Cinema

Anurag Singh found his true breakthrough in Punjabi cinema. His 2012 romantic comedy Jatt & Juliet became a monumental hit and is considered one of the highest-grossing Punjabi films of all time. He followed this success with Jatt & Juliet 2, further solidifying his position as one of the leading directors in Punjabi films.

 

He later directed Punjab 1984, a critically acclaimed and commercially successful film, which also ranks among the top grossers of Punjabi cinema. His work with actor Diljit Dosanjh, across multiple films, has resulted in some of the industry’s biggest blockbusters—six of them achieving major commercial success.

 

His Punjabi directorials also include the hit film Yaar Annmulle, featuring Arya Babbar, which added to his growing reputation.

 

 

Blockbusters and Production Ventures

In Bollywood, Anurag achieved massive recognition for Kesari (2019), starring Akshay Kumar. The film emerged as the biggest Bollywood blockbuster of 2019, earning widespread praise for its direction, performances, and storytelling.

 

Expanding his career further, Anurag made his production debut with Super Singh, which broke several box-office records and marked the launch of his production house, Brat Films. Under the same banner, he produced the blockbuster Shadaa, and later Puaada, released in 2021.

 

 

Personal Life

In 2005, Anurag Singh married his childhood sweetheart Madhurjeet Sarghi, a theatre artist and actress from Jalandhar. The couple welcomed their son, Shivaye Anurag Singh, in 2016. Singh continues to balance his family life with a flourishing career in the film industry.
