Appu Prabhakar
Biography
Appu Prabhakar is an Indian cinematographer known for his work across Malayalam, Bengali, Telugu, and Nepali cinema. He studied cinematography at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute after completing his engineering degree at the National Institute of Technology Calicut.
He began working in Malayalam cinema as a second camera operator on CIA: Comrade in America (2017). He later became an independent cinematographer and shot the short film Eye Test (2018), for which he won the National Film Award for Best Cinematography in the Non-Feature Film category.
His feature-film cinematography credits include the Telugu films Uma Maheswara Ugra Roopasya (2020) and Thimmarusu (2021), Bengali films such as Binisutoy (2020) and Aaro Ek Prithibi (2023), and Malayalam films including Level Cross (2024), Narayaneente Moonnaanmakkal (2024) and Rekhachithram (2025).
Appu Prabhakar served as the cinematographer of Rekhachithram (2025), directed by Jofin T. Chacko and starring Asif Ali and Anaswara Rajan. The film marked his first full-fledged commercial Malayalam feature as cinematographer.
With his work spanning several Indian languages and both independent and commercial productions, Prabhakar has established himself as a versatile cinematographer with a distinctive visual approach.
