Biography
He was born August 1, 1922, in Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada. Before pursuing acting professionally, he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II and studied at the University of British Columbia. He later moved to Britain, where he established himself as a stage actor before making his way to Broadway.
Hill achieved major recognition for playing George in the original Broadway production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1962. His performance earned him the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play and the New York Drama Critics' Award.
His film credits included The Ugly American (1963), Harper (1966), Petulia (1968), The Chairman (1969), Rabbit, Run (1970), The Andromeda Strain (1971), The Killer Elite (1975), Futureworld (1976), and A Bridge Too Far (1977).
On television, he became especially well known as the title character in Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law (1971–1974). He also appeared in numerous television dramas and made-for-TV films throughout the 1970s and 1980s.
Arthur Hill died on October 22, 2006, in Los Angeles, California, at the age of 84, following a battle with Alzheimer's disease.
