Arthur Francis Ibbetson was born on September 8, 1922, in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England. He began his film career in the 1930s as a clapper boy and camera assistant, gradually developing his skills as a camera operator before becoming a cinematographer.

He worked with several respected filmmakers and gained experience on major productions before becoming a director of photography in the late 1950s.
