Biography

Ashok Kumar Aggarwal (c. 1941 – 22 October 2014) was a celebrated Indian cinematographer whose work spanned nearly four decades, primarily in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema. Known for his visual storytelling and technical expertise, he contributed to over 125 feature films and was a respected member of the Indian Society of Cinematographers (ISC).

Early Life and Education
Born in Allahabad to a Hindi poet, Ashok Kumar developed a keen interest in photography and cinema from a young age. He earned a diploma in photography from Allahabad University and later pursued motion picture photography at the Institute of Film Technology, Adyar, Chennai. This formal training laid the foundation for his distinguished career in cinematography.

Career in Cinema
Ashok Kumar made his cinematic debut with the 1969 Malayalam film Janmabhoomi, earning the Kerala State Film Award for Best Cinematography. He won the same award two more times for Swapnam (1973) and Taxi Driver (1977). His collaborations with director P. N. Menon in the early 1970s helped establish his reputation in Malayalam cinema. He also worked with other prominent filmmakers such as Babu Nanthankode, J. D. Thottan, Bharathan, N. Sankaran Nair, and Ramu Kariat.

He entered Tamil cinema with Mahendran’s Uthiripookkal (1979) and went on to collaborate with Mahendran on many of his films, producing some of the most visually memorable works in Tamil cinema. Apart from his cinematography, Ashok Kumar directed ten feature films across Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi languages.

Awards and Legacy
Ashok Kumar received several state awards and the prestigious National Film Award for Best Cinematography, recognizing his contributions to Indian cinema. His visual style, attention to detail, and mastery of lighting made him one of the most respected cinematographers of his generation. His legacy continues through his son, Akash Aggarwal, who also works as a cinematographer in Tamil films.
