Baba Alam Siaposh

Biography

Baba Alam Siaposh is regarded as a foundational figure in the Pakistani film industry. Active from 1949 until his passing in 1970, he made substantial contributions to early Pakistani cinema by writing film scripts, dialogues, screenplays, and lyrics for numerous blockbuster films. One of his notable contributions was in 1949, when he helped actress Swaran Lata reacquaint herself with the Punjabi language for her role in the film Pheray. Having spent her formative years in Lucknow, she had lost fluency in Punjabi, and Baba Alam served as her language coach for the project.

An alumnus of the University of Punjab in Lahore, Baba Alam Siaposh began his artistic journey in the film world of Mumbai during the 1940s before establishing himself in Pakistan. Beyond cinema, he also left his mark in television music—his lyrics for the hit song “Jhaanjhar phabdi naa mutiar bina,” sung by Tahira Syed in 1974, remain memorable. His literary work Hanerian Raatan includes many of his film songs. He passed away on 2 March 1970 in Lahore, leaving behind an enduring legacy celebrated to this day.
