Balaji Sakthivel, born on January 1, 1964, in Dindigul, Tamil Nadu, is a distinguished Indian film director and actor renowned for his contributions to Tamil cinema. He commenced his career as an assistant director to the acclaimed filmmaker S. Shankar, which laid the foundation for his future endeavors in the industry.

 

 

Directorial Debut and Breakthrough

In 2002, Sakthivel made his directorial debut with "Samurai," featuring Vikram in the lead role. Despite receiving positive reviews, the film did not achieve significant commercial success. However, his subsequent venture, "Kaadhal" (2004), produced under S. Shankar's S Pictures banner, garnered widespread acclaim. Starring relatively new actors Bharath and Sandhya, "Kaadhal" was both a critical and commercial success, earning Sakthivel recognition for his realistic storytelling and adept direction.

 

 

Notable Works and Achievements

Sakthivel continued to make impactful films, including "Kalloori" (2007), which earned him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Dialogue Writer. His 2012 film, "Vazhakku Enn 18/9," received the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil, further cementing his reputation as a filmmaker committed to authentic narratives.

 

 

Transition to Acting

Expanding his artistic repertoire, Sakthivel ventured into acting with a role in the 2019 film "Asuran," directed by Vetrimaaran and starring Dhanush. He continued to take on acting roles in notable films such as "Vaanam Kottatum" (2020), "Ponniyin Selvan: I" (2022), and "Viduthalai Part 1" (2023), showcasing his versatility within the industry.

 

 

Personal Life

Balaji Sakthivel is married to Dr. L.R.S. Kalanithi, an Associate Professor of English and Vice-Principal (Students' Affairs) at Guru Nanak College in Chennai. The couple has two children: a daughter, Koushi Mahalakshmi, born in 2004, and a son, Vidhyadharan, born in 2007. The family resides in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
