Biography

Balakumaran (5 July 1946 – 15 May 2018) was a distinguished Indian Tamil writer renowned for his extensive contributions to literature and cinema. Over his prolific career, he authored more than 200 novels and 100 short stories, and crafted dialogues and screenplays for 23 films.

 

 

Early Life

Born in Pazhamarneri village near Thirukattupalli in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, Balakumaran's passion for literature was deeply influenced by his mother, a Tamil scholar and Sanskrit Siromani. Her recitations of Sangam literature and ancient texts inspired his literary pursuits. After completing his education at Wesley High School, he worked as a stenographer at TAFE, a tractor company in Chennai, before dedicating himself entirely to writing.

 

 

Literary Career

Balakumaran's literary journey began with poetry, eventually transitioning to short stories and novels. His debut novel, "Mercury Pookkal," was serialized in the magazine Saavi, followed by "Irumbu Kuthirai" (Iron Horse) in Kalki. His works often portrayed women as complex, fully realized characters, resonating deeply with readers. He was also a founding member of "KaChaTaThaPaRa," a literary journal aimed at pioneering modernist literature.

 

 

Film Contributions

Balakumaran made significant contributions to Tamil cinema as a dialogue and screenplay writer. Notable films featuring his work include:

  • Nayakan (1987)
  • Guna (1991)
  • Baashha (1995)
  • Pudhupettai (2006)

His dialogues enriched these films, earning him accolades such as the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Dialogue Writer for Kaadalan.

 

 

Awards and Honors

Throughout his illustrious career, Balakumaran received several awards, including:

  • Kalaimamani Award from the Government of Tamil Nadu
  • Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiyar Trust Award for "Irumbu Kudhiraigal"
  • Illakkiya Sindhanai Award for "Mercury Pookal"

He was also honored with the title "Sindhanai Chemmal" by the Lions Club Madras.

 

 

Personal Life

Balakumaran was married to Kamala and Shanta, and had two children, Gowri and Surya. A disciple of Yogi Ramsurat Kumar, his spiritual inclinations often influenced his writings. He passed away on 15 May 2018 in Chennai due to prolonged illness, leaving behind a legacy celebrated by readers and the film fraternity alike.
