Bashir Niaz

Biography

Bashir Niaz (9 July 1936 – 5 August 2002) was a prominent Pakistani screenwriter, known for his work as a dialogue writer and scriptwriter for numerous blockbuster films, including Diya aur Tofaan (1969), Aina (1977), and Bandish (1980). He won 15 Nigar Awards for his excellence in dialogue and scriptwriting.

 

Early Life
Born on 9 May 1936 in Jamke Chattha, Gujranwala District, Punjab, British India (now Pakistan), Bashir Niaz completed his education at Government Islamia College, Lahore. He began his career in journalism, contributing to various magazines and journals, eventually transitioning into film journalism and working with the weekly Nigar.

 

Career
Niaz began his screenwriting career in 1963 with the film Chhoti Behan. He collaborated with directors such as Shabab Kiranvi, K. Khurshid, and Haider Chowdhri. Over time, he formed a strong professional partnership with director Nazar-ul-Islam. Known as "the magician of dialogues," Niaz had a remarkable ability to craft witty, emotional, and impactful lines for the public. 

 

In 1980, he wrote the script for Bandish, a Pakistani adaptation of the Hollywood film Random Harvest (1942), which became a massive hit. Throughout his career, he penned scripts and dialogues for many successful Urdu and Punjabi films.
