Basil Poledouris

Biography

Basil Poledouris (August 21, 1945 – November 8, 2006) was an American film composer known for creating powerful, orchestral scores for action, adventure, fantasy, and science-fiction films. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, he developed an interest in music at an early age and studied at the University of Southern California's School of Music.

Poledouris began composing for film and television in the 1970s. His early collaborations with filmmaker John Milius helped establish his reputation, including the scores for Big Wednesday (1978), The Blue Lagoon (1980), and Conan the Barbarian (1982). His music for Conan the Barbarian became particularly celebrated for its dramatic orchestral and choral writing.

He went on to compose scores for numerous major films, including Red Dawn (1984), RoboCop (1987), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Quigley Down Under (1990), Starship Troopers (1997), and Les Misérables (1998).

For The Hunt for Red October (1990), directed by John McTiernan, Poledouris created a tense and majestic score that blended orchestral music with powerful choral elements. The film starred Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin and follows CIA analyst Jack Ryan as he attempts to determine whether Soviet submarine captain Marko Ramius is defecting or planning an attack.

Poledouris also composed extensively for television, including music for Lonesome Dove (1989), for which he received an Emmy Award nomination. His later film credits included Free Willy (1993), Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (1995), The Jungle Book (1994), and Cecil B. Demented (2000).

His music was distinguished by its strong thematic writing, large orchestral forces, dramatic percussion, and memorable melodies. He frequently created scores that emphasized the emotional and epic scale of the stories he accompanied.

Basil Poledouris died in Los Angeles, California, on November 8, 2006, at the age of 61. He is remembered as one of the most influential composers of modern action and adventure cinema, particularly for Conan the Barbarian, RoboCop, and The Hunt for Red October.
