Ben Mendelsohn was born on April 3, 1969, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, to Carole Ann Ferguson, a nurse, and Frederick Arthur Oscar Mendelsohn, a medical researcher. He grew up in a well-educated family and attended Heidelberg Primary School and Banyule High School. While in school, Ben initially considered a career in science or medicine, but soon discovered his passion for acting after participating in school plays.
