Benny Andersson

Biography

Benny Andersson is a Swedish musician, composer, and producer best known as a founding member of the legendary pop group ABBA. Renowned for his songwriting skills and musical versatility, Andersson has had a profound impact on both pop music and musical theatre.

Born on December 16, 1946, in Stockholm, Sweden, Andersson began playing piano at an early age and later joined several local bands before forming ABBA in 1972 alongside Björn Ulvaeus, Agnetha Fältskog, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. With ABBA, Andersson co-wrote and produced many of the group’s global hits, including Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, and Fernando, helping to define the sound of 1970s pop.

Following ABBA’s initial disbandment in the early 1980s, Andersson turned his focus to composing and producing music for theatre and film. His notable projects include the musicals Chess (with Ulvaeus and Tim Rice) and Kristina från Duvemåla, both of which received critical acclaim for their sophisticated melodies and storytelling.

Beyond theatre, Andersson has continued to record and perform, both as a solo artist and with the Benny Anderssons Orkester, blending folk, pop, and classical influences. His contributions to music have earned him worldwide recognition and a lasting legacy in both popular and theatrical music.
