Bernhard Wicki was an Austrian-Swiss actor and film director, best known for his influential work in European cinema.
He was born on October 28, 1919, in St. Pölten, Austria. Wicki began his career as an actor in theater and film before becoming a director. His experiences during World War II strongly influenced his later filmmaking.
Wicki achieved international recognition with The Bridge (1959), a powerful anti-war film about young German soldiers ordered to defend a strategically insignificant bridge during the final days of World War II. The film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film.
As an actor, he appeared in films such as The Longest Day (1962), The Visit (1964), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), and The Old Man and the Sea (1958). He also directed films including The Visit (1964) and The Miracle of the Wolves (1961).
