Billy Bob Thornton is an American actor, filmmaker, screenwriter, and musician, born on August 4, 1955, in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He began pursuing acting and writing after moving to California and working various jobs while trying to establish himself in the entertainment industry.

 

Thornton's breakthrough came with Sling Blade (1996), which he wrote, directed, and starred in as Karl Childers. His screenplay won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, while his performance earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

 

He subsequently appeared in numerous acclaimed films, including A Simple Plan (1998), Primary Colors (1998), Armageddon (1998), Monster's Ball (2001), The Man Who Wasn't There (2001), Bandits (2001), Bad Santa (2003), Friday Night Lights (2004), and The Judge (2014). His performance in A Simple Plan earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

 

Thornton has also enjoyed a successful television career. He portrayed the dangerous hitman Lorne Malvo in the first season of FX's Fargo (2014), winning a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Limited Series or Television Movie.

 

From 2016 to 2021, he starred as Billy McBride, a disgraced former lawyer seeking redemption and justice, in the Amazon legal drama Goliath. His performance earned him another Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama.

 

In 2024, Thornton began starring as Tommy Norris in the Paramount+ drama series Landman, earning another Golden Globe nomination for the role.

 

In addition to acting and filmmaking, Thornton is a singer-songwriter and musician. He has released solo albums and performs with his country-rock band The Boxmasters. His career across film, television, screenwriting, directing, and music has made him one of America's distinctive multi-talented entertainers.
