Bina Rai (13 July 1931 – 6 December 2009) was an Indian actress who was among the leading stars of Hindi cinema during the 1950s and early 1960s. Renowned for her grace, expressive performances, and screen presence, she appeared in several successful historical, romantic, and social dramas. She is best remembered for her acclaimed performances in Anarkali (1953), Taj Mahal (1963), and Ghunghat (1960), the latter earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Early Life

Bina Rai was born Krishna Sareen on 13 July 1931 in Lahore, Punjab, British India (now in Pakistan). Following the Partition of India in 1947, her family relocated to India. She completed her education in Mumbai and initially had no plans to pursue a career in films. However, after participating in a talent contest, she was noticed by filmmakers and soon entered the Hindi film industry.

Career

Bina Rai made her acting debut with Kali Ghata (1951), opposite Kishore Sahu. Her natural acting ability and elegant personality quickly earned her recognition. She rose to stardom with the historical romance Anarkali (1953), in which she portrayed the legendary courtesan Anarkali. The film was a major commercial success and established her as one of Bollywood's top actresses.
