Biography
B. R. Vijayalakshmi is an Indian cinematographer, director and film producer who has worked predominantly in South Indian cinema. She is widely recognized as one of India's pioneering women cinematographers.
She began her career in cinematography during a period when women were rarely involved in technical filmmaking roles. She worked on several Tamil and Malayalam productions and became known for her visual approach and technical expertise.
Vijayalakshmi later ventured into direction with Magalir Mattum (1994), a Tamil film centered on the lives and friendship of women. She has also worked in television and other visual-media productions.
Through her long career, B. R. Vijayalakshmi has made an important contribution to Indian cinema and helped open opportunities for women in cinematography and other technical areas of filmmaking.
