Captain Raju

Biography

Captain Raju (27 June 1950 – 17 September 2018) was an Indian actor, director, and former military officer who worked predominantly in Malayalam cinema. He also appeared in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and English films. Over a career spanning several decades, he acted in more than 500 films and became particularly known for villainous and character roles.

Early Life and Military Career

Born Raju Daniel in Omallur, Pathanamthitta, Kerala, he was one of the children of schoolteacher parents. After completing his education, he joined the Indian Army at the age of 21 and eventually served as a Captain. His military background later influenced his commanding screen presence and the many police, military, and authoritative characters he portrayed.

Film Career

After leaving the army, Captain Raju entered acting. He made his film debut with Raktham (1981), directed by Joshiy. His imposing physique and deep voice initially led to numerous villainous roles, but he gradually demonstrated his versatility through comedy, drama, and character roles.

One of his most memorable performances came as Pavanayi, the flamboyant professional killer in Nadodikkattu (1987). Although his screen time was relatively short, the character became a cult favourite and remains one of the most recognizable comic villain roles in Malayalam cinema.

Another acclaimed performance was Aringodar in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha (1989). Years later, he appeared as Unnimootha in Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja (2009), again working with the creative team associated with Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha.

His extensive filmography includes Vyooham, Aavanazhi, August 1, Valliettan, C.I.D. Moosa, Pattalam, Vargam, The Speed Track, Twenty:20 and Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja.

Career as a Director

Captain Raju also ventured into filmmaking. He directed the Malayalam film Etha Oru Snehagatha (1997), for which he also received writing credits. The film dealt with themes of communal harmony and human relationships.

He later began work on Mister Pavanayi 99.99, intended as a continuation of the popular Pavanayi character, although the project was not completed during his lifetime.

Television and Other Work

Beyond cinema, Captain Raju appeared in television serials and advertisements, becoming familiar to audiences outside films as well. His career demonstrated his ability to move between serious character roles, villains, and comic performances.

Death

Captain Raju suffered a stroke while travelling by air to the United States in 2018. He subsequently received medical treatment and later returned to Kerala. He died in Kochi on 17 September 2018, aged 68.
