Carmen Herrera (May 31, 1915 – February 12, 2022) was a Cuban-American abstract painter celebrated for her minimalist geometric compositions and bold use of color. Although she worked in relative obscurity for much of her life, Herrera gained international recognition in her late 80s and became one of the most admired figures in contemporary abstract art. Carmen Herrera was born on May 31, 1915, in Havana, Cuba, into an intellectually active family. Her father was the founding editor of the newspaper El Mundo, and her mother was a journalist.

Initially interested in architecture, Herrera studied at the University of Havana, where she developed an appreciation for geometry, structure, and spatial design—qualities that later became central to her artwork. Although she did not complete a degree in architecture, the discipline had a lasting influence on her artistic vision.

In the late 1930s, she moved to New York City, where she studied painting at the Art Students League of New York, expanding her knowledge of modern art and abstraction.
