She is the daughter of New Zealand-Australian actor and singer Jay Laga'aia, who is known for roles in "Star Wars" films and various television shows. Her heritage includes Samoan roots, with her grandfather hailing from Fa'aala, Palauli, in Savai'i, and her grandmother from Leulumoega Tuai on the main island of Upolu in Samoa.

 

 

Career Beginnings and Breakthrough: Laga'aia's acting career began with a role in the 2023 Amazon Prime television series "The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart," where she appeared in three episodes. However, her breakthrough came in June 2024, when it was announced that she would star as Moana in the highly anticipated live-action Disney film. At 17 years old at the time of the announcement, she expressed her excitement and honor to celebrate her heritage and represent young girls who look like her.

 

 

"Moana" (2026): In this live-action musical adventure, Catherine Laga'aia will portray the adventurous teenager Moana, who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. She will star alongside Dwayne Johnson, who reprises his role as the demigod Maui from the animated film. Other cast members include John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala. The film began principal photography between July and November 2024 and is scheduled for release on July 10, 2026.
