Biography

Chitragupt (16 November 1917 – 14 January 1991), born Chitragupt Shrivastava, was a celebrated Indian music composer who worked primarily in Hindi cinema. Known for his melodious compositions and strong grounding in Indian classical and folk music, he composed music for more than 150 films between the 1940s and the 1980s. His songs, many of which remain popular today, were sung by legendary playback singers including Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Asha Bhosle, and Kishore Kumar.

Early Life

Chitragupt was born on 16 November 1917 in Karmaini, Gopalganj district, Bihar, India. He earned postgraduate degrees in Economics and Journalism from Patna University before pursuing his passion for music. He was trained in Indian classical music from an early age.

Career

Chitragupt moved to Mumbai in the 1940s to build a career in the film industry. He initially worked as an assistant music director before making his debut as an independent composer. During the 1950s and 1960s, he became one of Hindi cinema's most respected music directors, especially for mythological, devotional, and family-oriented films.

His collaboration with lyricists and top playback singers produced numerous evergreen songs. He was admired for creating simple yet memorable melodies that blended classical ragas with popular appeal.

Chitragupt was the father of composer brothers Anand Shrivastav and Milind Shrivastav, who formed the successful Bollywood music duo Anand–Milind and continued the family's musical legacy.

Chitragupt passed away on 14 January 1991 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, at the age of 73.
