Chitrangada Satarupa is an Indian actress who works predominantly in Hindi and Bengali cinema. Known for her performances in critically acclaimed independent films, she has built a reputation for choosing bold, unconventional roles.
Early Life and Background
Chitrangada Satarupa was born as Chitrangada Chakraborty on 19 August in Kolkata to filmmaker parents—Satarupa Sanyal and Utpalendu Chakrabarty. Growing up in a creative environment, she was naturally inclined toward the arts and storytelling.
She studied Mass Communication at St. Xavier's College Kolkata, before moving to Mumbai to pursue acting. There, she immersed herself in theatre and performed in stage productions for several years. Her early play Colorblind also featured Kalki Koechlin.
She later married her longtime partner, Sambit Chatterjee.
Career
Early Work and Breakthrough
Chitrangada made her film debut with Antore Bahire (2012). She gained wider recognition with her role in the television series Stories by Rabindranath Tagore (2015), directed by Anurag Basu. Her portrayal of Mrinmayi—a spirited young woman navigating societal constraints—was well received.
Critical Acclaim in Independent Cinema
She rose to prominence with Tikli and Laxmi Bomb (2017), directed by Aditya Kripalani. The film earned critical acclaim and was showcased at international film festivals, winning awards such as Best Feature at the London Asian Film Festival and the Berlin Independent Film Festival.
She continued her collaboration with Kripalani in:
- Tottaa Pataaka Item Maal (2018)
- Devi Aur Hero (2019)
These films further established her as a strong performer in indie cinema.
