Biography

 

Claire Foy was born on 16 April 1984 in Stockport, Greater Manchester, England. She is an English actress who studied drama and screen studies at Liverpool John Moores University before completing a one-year course at the Oxford School of Drama. She began her professional screen career in 2008 with the BBC miniseries Little Dorrit, after making her screen debut in the pilot of Being Human.

 

Foy gained critical attention for portraying Anne Boleyn in the BBC historical drama Wolf Hall (2015), earning a BAFTA Television Award nomination for Best Actress. She also appeared in productions such as The Promise, Upstairs, Downstairs, White Heat, and Crossbones.

 

Her international breakthrough came with Netflix's The Crown (2016–2017), in which she portrayed the young Queen Elizabeth II during the first two seasons. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe Award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She later returned briefly to the role in the final seasons of the series.

 

Foy subsequently established herself in major films, including Breathe (2017), Unsane (2018), The Girl in the Spider's Web (2018), and Damien Chazelle's First Man (2018), in which she portrayed Janet Shearon, the wife of astronaut Neil Armstrong. Her performance in First Man earned BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress.

 

Her later work includes The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (2021), A Very British Scandal (2021), Women Talking (2022), and All of Us Strangers (2023). For All of Us Strangers, she received another BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

 

Through her performances in historical dramas, psychological thrillers, biographical films, and contemporary dramas, Foy has become one of the prominent actresses of her generation, with The Crown remaining her most internationally recognized role.
