Biography
Colin Welland (July 4, 1934 – November 2, 2015) was an English actor and screenwriter best known for writing acclaimed British films and television dramas. Born Colin Edward Williams in Liverpool, England, he initially worked as a teacher before pursuing acting.
Welland became widely known for his role as Mr. Farthing in the BBC television series Z-Cars. He later appeared in films including Kes (1969), in which he played Mr. Farthing, and The Ruling Class (1972).
As a screenwriter, Welland achieved major international success with Chariots of Fire (1981), the historical sports drama directed by Hugh Hudson. The screenplay earned him the Academy Award for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Welland also wrote screenplays for films such as The Long Good Friday (1980), Yanks (1979), The Dressmaker (1988), and The Bostonians (1984). His writing often explored British society, class, ambition, relationships, and personal struggle.
He received numerous honors for his work and became one of Britain's best-known screenwriters of the late 20th century.
Colin Welland died in London on November 2, 2015, at the age of 81. He is remembered particularly for Chariots of Fire and for his contributions to British film and television as both an actor and writer.
