Biography
C. Ramchandra (12 January 1918 – 5 January 1982), born Ramchandra Narhar Chitalkar, was an Indian music composer, playback singer, and occasional actor who worked primarily in Hindi and Marathi cinema. He was one of the leading music directors of the 1940s and 1950s, celebrated for blending Indian melodies with Western musical influences.
C. Ramchandra began his career as an actor before turning to music composition, where he achieved widespread success. He composed memorable soundtracks for films such as Shehnai (1947), Patanga (1949), Albela (1951), Anarkali (1953), Azaad (1955), and Navrang (1959). His songs, many of them sung by legendary artists such as Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, and Talat Mahmood, remain enduring classics of Indian cinema.
In addition to composing, he occasionally sang under the name Chitalkar, delivering several popular duets and solo performances. One of his most celebrated patriotic compositions is "Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon" (1963), sung by Lata Mangeshkar, which became one of India's most iconic songs.
C. Ramchandra's innovative compositions and lasting contributions to Indian film music have secured his place among the greatest music directors in the history of Indian cinema.
