Daniel Christopher "Dan" Gilroy (born June 24, 1959, in Santa Monica, California) is an American screenwriter and film director recognized for his sharp storytelling and distinctive directorial voice. Hailing from a family deeply embedded in the arts, Gilroy has carved out a notable career by crafting compelling narratives, particularly in the thriller genre.

Early Life and Education:

Dan Gilroy comes from a distinguished artistic family. He is the son of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Frank D. Gilroy and sculptor and writer Ruth Dorothy Gaydos. His older brother, Tony Gilroy, is a renowned screenwriter and director, and his fraternal twin brother, John Gilroy, is a respected film editor. This upbringing, where his father wrote full-time at home, demystified the profession of writing for him.

Gilroy grew up in Washingtonville, New York, and went on to graduate from Dartmouth College in 1981 with a degree in English literature. During his time at Dartmouth, he developed a strong interest in Victorian-era written works. After college, he briefly worked as a reporter and reviewer for Variety in New York before shifting his focus to screenwriting.

Screenwriting Career and Key Collaborations:

Gilroy's screenwriting career began in the early 1990s. His first produced screenplay was the science fiction thriller Freejack (1992), which he co-wrote. It was on the set of this film that he met actress Rene Russo, whom he married later that year; she has since become a frequent collaborator in his films.

He continued to write for films such as Chasers (1994), Two for the Money (2005) starring Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey, and the visually striking fantasy The Fall (2006). He also contributed to the story for the science fiction action drama Real Steel (2011) and co-wrote the script for the action blockbuster The Bourne Legacy (2012) with his brother Tony Gilroy.

Directorial Debut and Critical Acclaim:

In 2014, Dan Gilroy made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed crime thriller Nightcrawler. He also penned the screenplay for the film, which earned him widespread praise for its unsettling portrayal of a driven, opportunistic videographer in Los Angeles. Nightcrawler garnered Gilroy an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay, along with wins for Best Screenplay and Best First Feature at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Following the success of Nightcrawler, he continued to direct his screenplays:

Roman J. Israel, Esq. (2017): A legal drama starring Denzel Washington, for whom Gilroy specifically wrote the lead role. Washington received an Oscar nomination for his performance.

Velvet Buzzsaw (2019): A horror-thriller set in the contemporary art world of Los Angeles, reuniting him with Rene Russo and Jake Gyllenhaal.
