Biography

Datta Naik (1922–1987), also known professionally as Dattaram Naik or simply Datta Naik, was an Indian music composer who worked primarily in Hindi cinema. He was known for his melodious compositions and for blending Indian classical, folk, and popular musical styles. Before establishing himself as an independent composer, he earned widespread respect as a rhythm arranger and assistant to legendary composer Shankar of the famous composer duo Shankar–Jaikishan.

Early Life

Datta Naik was born on 12 December 1922 in Goa, Portuguese India (present-day Goa, India). He developed an interest in music at a young age and later moved to Mumbai, where he began his career in the Hindi film industry.

Career

Datta Naik first gained recognition as an accomplished percussionist and rhythm arranger. His innovative use of rhythm made him an important member of the Shankar–Jaikishan team, contributing to the musical success of many classic Hindi films.

He later ventured into independent music direction, composing for numerous films during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. His songs were sung by legendary playback singers such as Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Mukesh.
