Dave Boyle
Biography
Dave Boyle is an American filmmaker, writer, director, editor, and producer known for creating character-driven stories that often explore Japanese and Asian-American communities. Born in 1982, he studied Japanese at Brigham Young University and later developed a filmmaking career that combined his interest in Japanese culture with independent cinema.
Boyle made his feature directorial debut with Big Dreams Little Tokyo (2006), followed by White on Rice (2009), Surrogate Valentine (2011), and Daylight Savings (2012). His films frequently blend comedy, drama, and cross-cultural themes.
He received considerable critical recognition for Man from Reno (2014), a neo-noir mystery starring Ayako Fujitani, Pepe Serna, and Kazuki Kitamura. The film won the Narrative Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature at the 2014 Los Angeles Film Festival and was later nominated for the John Cassavetes Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards.
Boyle later moved into television directing, including an episode of Dimension 404 (2017). He achieved international recognition as the creator, lead writer, and director of Netflix's Japanese-language action series House of Ninjas (2024). The series became a major international success and reached No. 1 on Netflix's global Top 10 for non-English-language titles.
His other work includes producing I Will Make You Mine (2020) and the documentary Cat Daddies (2022), as well as co-writing Tokyo Cowboy (2024). Through his work in independent film and international television, Boyle has established a distinctive career connecting American and Japanese filmmaking.
