Biography

David Abraham Cheulkar (21 June 1909 – 28 December 1981), popularly known simply as David, was an Indian actor celebrated for his warm screen presence, impeccable comic timing, and memorable character roles. One of the most respected character actors in Hindi cinema, he appeared in more than 100 films over a career spanning nearly four decades.

Early Life

David Abraham Cheulkar was born on 21 June 1909 in Thane, Bombay Presidency, British India (now in Maharashtra, India). He completed his education at the University of Mumbai before entering the entertainment industry. Before acting, he worked as a journalist and became involved in theatre, which helped shape his acting career.

Career

David made his film debut in the 1940s and soon became a familiar face in Hindi cinema. Known for portraying kind-hearted uncles, judges, doctors, teachers, and other dignified characters, he earned widespread admiration for his natural acting style and versatility.

Some of his most notable films include Boot Polish (1954), Jagte Raho (1956), Baat Ek Raat Ki (1962), Guide (1965), Anupama (1966), Gol Maal (1979), and Baton Baton Mein (1979). His performances brought warmth, humor, and authenticity to every role, making him one of the most dependable supporting actors of his generation.

Apart from films, David was also a respected public figure. He was a popular commentator for India's Republic Day parades for many years and was admired for his eloquence and dignified personality.

Honours

In recognition of his contributions to Indian cinema and public life, the Government of India awarded David Abraham Cheulkar the Padma Shri, one of the country's highest civilian honours.
