Biography
David Harewood is an English actor, director, author, and presenter, born on December 8, 1965, in Birmingham, England. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) and began his career in theater before moving into television and film.
Harewood gained international recognition for playing David Estes, the director of the CIA's Counterterrorism Center, in the thriller series Homeland. He later became widely known as J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter and Hank Henshaw in Supergirl, a role he played from 2015 to 2021.
His other notable screen credits include Blood Diamond, The Merchant of Venice, The Night Manager, The Man in the High Castle, and Free in Deed. He also had a distinguished theater career and made history in 1997 as the first Black actor to play Othello at London's National Theatre.
Harewood later expanded into directing and documentary presenting, including David Harewood: Psychosis and Me. He has also written the memoir Maybe I Don't Belong Here. In 2024, he became president of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Through his work across theater, film, television, writing, and directing, David Harewood has established himself as a respected and versatile British performer.
