David Macpherson

Biography

David Macpherson is a Scottish screenwriter and television creator best known for creating and writing the Amazon Original supernatural thriller series The Rig. He grew up in the Highlands of Scotland and later settled in Edinburgh.

Before pursuing screenwriting, Macpherson worked in several different fields. His career included time in the UK Parliament, working with the police in youth justice, and contributing to environmental policy alongside the Scottish Government. These varied experiences later informed his approach to storytelling and character development.

Macpherson moved into screenwriting after his original screenplay Wrath was nominated for the Edinburgh TV Festival's New Writing Award. The script was also selected for the Brit List, which recognizes some of the best unproduced screenplays in the United Kingdom.

His breakthrough came with The Rig, a supernatural thriller set on a remote North Sea oil platform. The series follows a group of workers who become trapped on the rig after a mysterious fog cuts them off from the mainland, leading them into a terrifying encounter with unexplained forces.

Macpherson continues to work across television and film, developing several projects for future production. His career reflects a transition from public-sector and environmental work into successful television writing and genre storytelling.
