Biography
David Niven was a British actor and author known for his elegant screen presence, wit, and performances in comedies, dramas, and adventure films.
He was born James David Graham Niven on March 1, 1910, in London, England. After serving in the British Army, he moved into acting and established a successful career in Hollywood and Britain.
Niven's notable films include The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), Wuthering Heights (1939), A Matter of Life and Death (1946), Around the World in 80 Days (1956), The Guns of Navarone (1961), The Pink Panther (1963), Bedtime Story (1964), Casino Royale (1967), and Death on the Nile (1978).
He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as Major Pollock in Separate Tables (1958). He was also a successful author, publishing autobiographical books including The Moon's a Balloon and Bring on the Empty Horses.
Niven continued acting until shortly before his death. He died on July 29, 1983, in Château-d'Œx, Switzerland, at the age of 73.
