One of his most notable film roles came in City Slickers (1991), directed by Ron Underwood and starring Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, and Bruno Kirby. Paymer played Ira Shalowitz, Billy Crystal's character's brother-in-law. His performance was well received and helped raise his profile.
