Biography

Deborah Ayorinde is a British-Nigerian actress born on August 13, 1987, in London, England. She began performing at the age of seven after joining a drama school and later moved with her family to San Jose, California. She graduated with honors from Howard University in 2009 with a degree in Film Production. During her university years, she won the Paul Robeson Award for Best Actress for a short film she wrote and directed.

 

Ayorinde began building her television career with appearances in series including Meet the Browns, Necessary Roughness, Constantine, Sleepy Hollow, and The Affair. She gained wider recognition as Candace Miller in the Marvel/Netflix series Luke Cage. Her film credits include Barbershop: The Next Cut (2016), Girls Trip (2017), Harriet (2019), and Fatherhood (2021).

 

Her breakthrough came with Amazon's horror anthology series Them (2021), in which she portrayed Livia “Lucky” Emory. She later returned to the anthology in Them: The Scare (2024), playing Detective Dawn Reeve. Her performance in the first season earned her an Independent Spirit Award nomination.

 

Ayorinde also starred as Nina Richards in the British drama series Riches (2022) and appeared in True Detective, The Village, and Truth Be Told. In 2024, she portrayed Elinor Dashwood in the Hallmark adaptation Sense and Sensibility. Her later credits include Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue and Fightland.

 

With a career spanning film, television, and theater, Deborah Ayorinde has become known for versatile performances in dramas, thrillers, horror, and comedy, particularly through acclaimed roles in Them, Luke Cage, Riches, and Harriet.
