Biography

Dennis Joseph (20 October 1957 – 10 May 2021) was an Indian screenwriter and film director who predominantly worked in Malayalam cinema. He became one of the most influential writers of Malayalam cinema during the 1980s and early 1990s, particularly through his collaborations with directors such as Joshiy and Thampi Kannanthanam.

Early Life

Dennis Joseph was born in Ettumanoor, Kottayam, Kerala. He studied at Ettumanoor Government High School and later graduated from Deva Matha College, Kuravilangad. He also completed a diploma in pharmacy. Before entering films, he worked as a journalist and sub-editor for the Malayalam film magazine Cut Cut.

He came from a family with connections to the Malayalam film industry. Actor Jose Prakash was his uncle, while actor and producer Prem Prakash was also among his relatives.

Film Career

Dennis Joseph entered Malayalam cinema as a screenwriter with Eeran Sandhya (1985). He quickly established himself as a successful commercial screenwriter and went on to write several major films of the 1980s and 1990s.

His notable screenwriting credits include Nirakkoottu (1985), Rajavinte Makan (1986), Shyama (1986), New Delhi (1987), No. 20 Madras Mail (1990), Kottayam Kunjachan (1990), Indrajaalam (1990), Akashadoothu (1993), Palayam (1994) and F.I.R. (1999).

He was particularly associated with Mammootty and wrote several films that became important milestones in the actor's career. New Delhi, in particular, became a major success and is among Dennis Joseph's best-known works.

Directorial Career

Dennis Joseph also worked as a director. He directed five Malayalam films, including Manu Uncle (1988), Nair Saab (1989), Mahanagaram (1992), Adharvam (1992) and Appu.

Among these, Manu Uncle became especially notable as a children's adventure film and won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film.

Later Years and Death

Dennis Joseph remained involved in Malayalam cinema throughout his career. His last screenplay was Geethanjali, directed by Priyadarshan and starring Mohanlal.

He died on 10 May 2021 in Ettumanoor, Kottayam, at the age of 63. He was survived by his wife, Leena, and three children.
