Biography

Devi Sri Prasad, popularly known as DSP, is an Indian film composer, lyricist, singer-songwriter, and performer who primarily works in Telugu and Tamil cinema, while also contributing to Hindi films. Born on August 2, 1979, in Amalapuram, Andhra Pradesh, he comes from a family with strong connections to the Telugu film industry.

Early Life and Family

Devi Sri Prasad was born Gandham Devi Sri Prasad into a Telugu-speaking family. His father, G. Satyamurthy, was a noted Telugu screenwriter who worked on films including Devatha, Khaidi No. 786, and Pedarayudu. Devi Sri Prasad was named after his maternal grandparents, Devi Meenakshi and Prasada Rao.

He grew up in Madras, now Chennai, and studied at Sir M. Venkata Subba Rao School in T. Nagar. He has a younger sister and a younger brother, Gandham Sagar, who is also a playback singer.

Musical Career

Devi Sri Prasad began his music career in 1997, contributing one of the tracks to the studio album Dance Party. His major breakthrough came with the soundtrack of the Telugu film Anandam (2001). The success of the album established him as a promising young composer in Telugu cinema.

In the same year, he made his Tamil film debut with Badri, for which he composed the score and also sang two songs. Over the following years, he became one of the most sought-after composers in South Indian cinema.

Known for energetic compositions, catchy melodies, folk influences, and dance-oriented numbers, DSP has created music for more than 100 films. His songs have become particularly popular for their distinctive combination of contemporary sounds and traditional Indian musical elements.

Work in Cinema

Devi Sri Prasad has composed music for numerous successful Telugu films, including Arya, Bunny, Shankar Dada MBBS, Bommarillu, Jalsa, Gabbar Singh, Rangasthalam, Pushpa: The Rise, and Waltair Veerayya.

His association with Pushpa: The Rise (2021) brought his music to a wider international audience. The soundtrack and background score became major highlights of the film, while songs such as "Srivalli" and "Oo Antava Oo Antava" achieved widespread popularity.

He has also worked extensively in Tamil cinema and contributed to Hindi-language projects, demonstrating his versatility across different film industries.

Other Creative Work

In addition to composing music, DSP is known for singing and writing lyrics. His energetic stage performances and live musical shows have further established him as a performer.

He also ventured into choreography, choreographing a song for the 2015 Telugu film Kumari 21F.

Awards and Recognition

Devi Sri Prasad has received numerous awards throughout his career. His accolades include ten Filmfare Awards, including nine for Best Music Director – Telugu and a Special Award for Best Background Music. He has also won five CineMAA Awards, seven SIIMA Awards, and a Nandi Award for Best Music Director.

His consistent success has made him one of the highest-paid and most prominent music composers in Telugu cinema.

Personal Life and Family

Devi Sri Prasad's father, G. Satyamurthy, died in December 2015. His younger brother, Gandham Sagar, has pursued a career as a playback singer, continuing the family's association with music and entertainment.
